As soon as you enroll in Medicare, you will receive your Medicare card. You must bring your Medicare card to all medical and health services appointments. If you are speaking with Medicare or your health insurance or prescription drug company, you should also have this information available. Here are detailed instructions on what to do once you receive your Medicare card and if you lose it.
Medicare Card
A red, white, and blue Medicare card will be mailed to you once you are enrolled in Medicare. You will receive your Medicare card 3 months before your 65th birthday or 25th month after you start receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI).
Medicare cards indicate that you have Medicare health insurance, whether Part A, Part B, or both. Your card will indicate when your coverage begins. A unique Medicare Number will also be displayed on the card. Medicare numbers are no longer the same as Social Security numbers. Health care providers such as doctors, pharmacists, and others will ask you for this number.
You can request a new Medicare card by calling Medicare (1-800-Medicare), or on the Social Security website.
